On February 26, 2016, the Department of Justice announced in fiscal year 2015, the government recovered $2.4 billion from healthcare fraud judgments, settlements and additional impositions in healthcare fraud cases and proceedings.
Since its inception in 1997, the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control (HCFAC) Program has returned more than $29.4 billion to the Medicare Trust Funds, the Health Care Fraud and Abuse Control program has returned $6.10 for each dollar invested.
The False Claims Act is another tool used to help fight health care fraud. More than $1.9 billion in settlements and judgments from civil cases involving fraud and false claims against federal health care programs such as Medicare and Medicaid were recovered by the Department of Justice in 2015.
